This 1976 film feels like a blend of James Bond and The Pink Panther, and it opens with the previously institutionalized Chief Inspector Dreyfus, played by Herbert Lom, about to be discharged—things are progressing smoothly until Clouseau appears. It doesn't take long for the recently stabilized former police commissioner Dreyfus to revert to a state of wild agitation; he demands that authorities hand over Clouseau or face worldwide destruction. What follows is ninety minutes filled with bizarre events, including an inflatable Quasimodo floating over Notre Dame, a ridiculous confrontation with someone described as an ‘oriental lunatic,’ deadly conflicts at the Oktoberfest celebration, a dentist sporting a fake nose, and the demolition of the United Nations headquarters. Peter Sellers and director Blake Edwards clearly made all the right choices in this one; given how outlandish the screenplay is, it was difficult to fail.
