I wasn’t expecting much from *The Pickup* initially, and truthfully, it didn’t turn out to be a great film. The writing, among other things, definitely holds it back; however, what bothered me most was the visual presentation – it’s an unattractive movie, particularly those scenes set inside that truck. The film world felt artificial as well, especially during that extended highway sequence. They try to explain it away by calling it a "ghost town," but that feels like an easy excuse. The combination of Eddie Murphy and Pete Davidson is barely acceptable, though I’m not entirely convinced. Davidson performs better than Murphy does. Keke Palmer really stands out; her performance provides the film with the necessary spark. Eva Longoria isn't bad, even if she's stuck with a role that's easily forgotten. Jack Kesy and Ismael Cruz Córdova are just as forgettable, despite hinting at what could have been. The ending is what prevented me from hating this 2025 release; it has enough action to keep you engaged. I did see moments of promise throughout—for instance, the Clark joke lands well—but overall, it’s pretty average.
