There's something worthwhile to be found in *The Piano Lesson*, even though it has its ups and downs. My engagement fluctuated noticeably as the story unfolded, suggesting there might have been opportunities to hold my attention more steadily—though I remained invested for the most part. John David Washington and Samuel L. Jackson both deliver strong performances, but Danielle Deadwyler truly impressed me; she gave a remarkable portrayal. In fact, I wasn’t familiar with her work until recently, having just seen *Carry-On* as well. Michael Potts deserves recognition as well. The story itself is interesting enough, the music works fine, and there are some strong scenes—I especially remember the performance of "Berta, Berta" featuring Jackson and others. It's clear now that this originated as a play, which becomes obvious in certain moments.
