Michael, portrayed by LaKeith Stanfield—who clearly has discerning taste in outerwear—is a reporter assigned to interview a man grieving his wife. While there, he notices a photograph featuring a girl, taken by Chanté Adams ("Christina"). Returning to New Orleans, Michael attempts to find other works by this photographer, which leads him to Mae (Issa Rae), an assistant curator at a gallery and the object of his affection. The story then follows their fairly commonplace romance, though I found the number of coincidences to be excessive; ultimately, it’s just a somewhat unusual love story featuring solid performances from Stanfield and Rae. Certain moments boast a beautiful soundtrack—soulful jazz music characteristic of Louisiana—but beyond that, this felt like a forgettable 100 minutes.
