'The Phoenician Scheme' exemplifies what makes Wes Anderson’s filmmaking style so appealing. I really liked this! While I consider 'Fantastic Mr. Fox' and 'The French Dispatch' to be among his best, this film from 2025 surpasses them for me. It’s both hilarious and visually impressive; it’s characteristic of Anderson’s films, containing everything you would anticipate from one of his movies. The cast is as star-studded as usual, featuring many actors I appreciate, so I wasn't expecting anything less than a good time. Benicio del Toro delivers an exceptional performance—I’ve always enjoyed him as an actor (such as in 'Sicario' and 'The Hunted'), but this is the first of the ten films he’s been in that I would consider truly outstanding; it's a performance that sticks with you. Mia Threapleton stands out as the only significant performer onscreen whom I hadn’t previously encountered; strangely, I recognized her voice immediately, yet my search of her filmography reveals I haven't seen anything she's been in—which is peculiar, maybe someone else just sounds like her? Where does one even start with the rest of the cast? Michael Cera shines, Tom Hanks and Bryan Cranston are a delight to watch, Mathieu Amalric matches Richard Ayoade’s energy, Jeffrey Wright and Benedict Cumberbatch are memorable (visually!). There are many other well-known actors featured as well. I still have eight Wes Anderson films left to view eventually, but after seeing only five, it's clear he’s a consistently good director. I would be shocked if I found any of those other works disappointing, even though I didn’t completely love 'Moonrise Kingdom'—it still has its merits.
