CinemaSerf on The Phoenician Scheme

I appreciated this film because, in contrast to some of his newer efforts, I felt it had a stronger narrative foundation for the comedic elements as it chronicles the incredibly dangerous exploits of entrepreneur “Korda” (Benicio del Toro). Having amassed considerable wealth through questionable means and frequently targeted by assassins, he resolves to draft his will after narrowly escaping an attack in the desert. He has numerous sons but only one daughter, "Liesl" (Mia Threapleton), a nun who has taken holy orders. This “Liesl” is quite different from the character portrayed by Julie Andrews; she’s sharp and perceptive as her father initiates his most elaborate, clandestine, and damaging scheme yet—a move that only serves to antagonize "Excalibur" (Rupert Friend), who leads a shadowy organization reminiscent of “SPECTRE,” intent on stopping him and ensuring his demise. The film's drawback is that it doesn’t deviate significantly stylistically from Anderson’s recent movies, and the familiar cast including Willem Dafoe, Scarlett Johansson, and Tom Hanks don’t provide particularly fresh or memorable character portrayals for viewers to connect with. This lack of novelty also diminishes the humor, which has a feel similar to “Monty Python.” However, del Toro delivers a commanding performance throughout, and along the way, the film critiques entrenched interests, industrial exploitation, and the misuse of self-serving power in an engaging and straightforward manner. The movie begins quickly and maintains momentum without many lulls, bringing to mind "Grand Budapest Hotel" (2014) more than “Asteroid City” (2023). While it’s not as exceptional as Anderson's earlier, more inventive work, it remains a diverting group project enhanced by beautiful production design and an abundance of bandages.
