It seemed for a while that Hollywood envisioned a bright future for Billy Zane, but unfortunately, projects of this caliber haven't really benefited his career trajectory. He takes on the title role, performing acceptably but nothing more, and finds himself needing to get to New York to pursue the villainous "Drax" (Treat Williams). Drax’s goal is to acquire and merge three ancient skulls to gain supreme power throughout existence. It's as if approximately six different movies have been crammed into this one, and it doesn't do any of them any favors. Catherine Zeta-Jones does what she can, but her acting abilities were never particularly strong, and the role itself is so thin that she often appears somewhat silly. There’s a small spark of something worthwhile with "Diana" (Kristy Swanson), who functions as our hero’s attractive, annoyed, yet skilled former girlfriend. The production values are decent, at least visually. However, Zane struggles to hold things together while wearing purple lycra, and the plot development toward the conclusion arrives too late to inject any energy into this sluggish comic book story. Perhaps it would have been more appealing in black and white?
