I admit I had reservations when I first heard about who they chose to be in this movie – Shia LaBeouf attempting a comeback following his personal troubles with a story centered on a young man with Down Syndrome? But my doubts were completely misplaced. It’s an incredibly positive and heartwarming experience from beginning to end. With a short role for Bruce Dern, a vintage lens filter effect, the film takes you on a journey where Zak encounters Tyler, and together they embark on an adventure that showcases a genuinely delightful and believable connection. You can sense how much enjoyment both actors had while filming; their rapport is undeniable. Having worked with people living with Down Syndrome and their families, I know firsthand how prevalent institutionalization once was, and the fear surrounding it; this fictionalized escape and subsequent journey powerfully illustrates that everyone possesses an indomitable spirit. I wholeheartedly suggest seeing this film.
