There's some visual appeal thanks to George Clooney being undeniably charismatic. Beyond that, though, this is mostly a lifeless and forgettable spy movie lacking any real excitement, centering on an American colonel called "Devoe" and his contact, "Kelly" (Nicole Kidman). He’s a specialist in intelligence, she’s a scientific advisor at the White House – and they're both worried after a nuclear incident aboard a train in Russia. Was it truly accidental? What became of the warheads being moved? Is this an action orchestrated by the government, or is the Kremlin struggling with some problematic individuals? Naturally, it’s up to this less-than-captivating pair to stop whatever scheme is underway before the United Nations itself gets caught in the crosshairs. It includes familiar elements – political maneuvering in Washington, Vienna takes a beating, and there are explosions, naturally – but ultimately feels too unoriginal. It resembles a watered-down "James Bond" movie, minus the cool devices or memorable theme song. The other actors do an okay job, and they seem to be mostly local hires from where filming took place in Macedonia, though that doesn’t improve the stiff conversations and the sluggish rhythm of the story, which runs over two hours. Clooney suits the role, Kidman seems unsure and, honestly, a bit weary – I understand why.
