This film presents an uncomfortable social situation that’s far from pleasant, making Abigail’s party seem almost agreeable by comparison. "Janet," portrayed by Kristen Scott Thomas, is informed of a government promotion, prompting friends to visit and offer their congratulations. Her husband, Timothy Spall, appears detached as he drinks wine. He then makes an announcement that significantly diminishes his wife's joy. This marks the beginning of what turns out to be a series of unfortunate events, as nearly everyone present harbors secrets and tensions begin to rise. While Spall’s character, "Bill," has a notable effect on the group, even with limited dialogue; he skillfully disrupts this collection of troubled individuals. The situation stretches credibility—it's difficult to imagine these people genuinely associating in any real-world setting. Bruno Ganz delivers some absurd remarks criticizing Western culture, and Cillian Murphy seems primarily occupied with finding a place to set things down. Despite the palpable toxicity, the story feels rushed and artificial, as if designed to manufacture conflict rather than depict an authentic group of friends—even one connected through a politician. The experience is brief, but it retains too much of its theatrical origins and leaves significant portions of the narrative unexplored.
