The Pale Blue Eye boasts impressive acting, beautiful visuals, and a serviceable plot, but struggles with its slow pace and excessive length, which felt unnecessary. Christian Bale delivers an excellent performance. He portrays his detective’s work with great intensity while also conveying the sadness of personal losses. While this level of performance is typical for Bale, Harry Melling's contribution was unexpected and remarkable. His depiction of Edgar Allan Poe had a quirky charm that consistently captured attention, even when sharing scenes with Bale. The film felt lengthy and stretched out. The initial portion flowed well as viewers became acquainted with the setting and the crimes taking place. However, it began to feel sluggish moving into the final act. Much of this excess could have been trimmed for a more enjoyable experience. Despite that, I found the story engaging and appreciated the plot’s twists, though the conclusion left me pondering some unanswered questions. Score: 61% Verdict: Decent
