My wife felt like she’d encountered this film before, which was surprising since it appeared fresh to me when we watched it not long ago. We both found it enjoyable. I wasn't worried by comments mentioning its deliberate pace because my wife and I have always favored films that develop a quiet narrative thoughtfully, and for the most part, this one did just that. My only reservation stems from the beginning; I didn’t initially buy Walter’s feelings for Kitty. He stated he was in love with her, but I can't help but think some scenes depicting him falling for her might have been cut. His actions mostly involved following her around at gatherings and expressing a desire to marry her before his departure for China. Likewise, Kitty’s attraction to Charlie didn’t feel well-developed. It seemed like they exchanged glances, engaged in some light flirting, and then abruptly found themselves together. However, after setting that aside, the film was quite good. Over time, Kitty's character becomes more defined, and her marriage starts to recover from the damage caused by what she did earlier. The concluding scene, set several years after the events of the majority of the movie, brings the story back around in a way that feels complete. Overall, it’s a good film deserving of patient viewing.
