The moment “Larry Kincaid” is killed, the local people take action and set out to find those responsible. A group led by Confederate officer "Tetley" (Frank Conroy) confronts three individuals transporting cattle in a remote area. Apparently, these three had been with “Kincaid” not long before, so they’re quickly subjected to an impromptu trial with the intention of carrying out a lynching. William Wellman directs what I consider to be one of the most intensely gripping segments in film history. Despite lacking any proof, will the group be swayed by the pleas of innocence from "Martin" (Dana Andrews) and his friends, among them Anthony Quinn’s "Martinez"? The atmosphere is thick with anxiety as elderly “Davies” (Harry Davenport) attempts to offer a sensible perspective while "Art" (Harry Morgan) and "Carter" (Henry Fonda) also struggle with their own feelings. It's a powerful criticism of vigilante justice; the film’s dialogue and visual style are very effective in creating a sense that something bad is about to happen. The conclusion contains an unexpected turn that leaves viewers contemplating its meaning, possessing a quality reminiscent of "Forgive them father..." Fonda may be listed first, but Conroy's acting stands out—a display of harshness within the context of formal attire.
