It's certainly admirable when films tackle the challenge of addiction, and movies about people trying to rebuild their lives by reconnecting with their origins are also familiar territory. Writer-director Nora Fingscheidt’s new film incorporates elements of both these themes, drawing from a memoir by Amy Liptrot. The story centers on Rona (Saoirse Ronan), a biologist living in London whose reckless behavior and alcoholism led to the loss of her career and a relationship with Daynin (Paapa Essiedu). Following completion of a 12-step program, she chooses to return to the Orkney Islands off the coast of Scotland for healing and reflection. While there, she’s forced to face aspects of her past that may have contributed to her struggles with substance abuse, particularly involving her parents: Annie (Saskia Reeves), an intense Christian fundamentalist, and Andrew (Stephen Dillane), a sheep farmer dealing with bipolar disorder and other issues. The narrative unfolds in a non-chronological way, interweaving memories with Rona’s recovery period – a technique seen in similar films. Despite Ronan's excellent performance, some of the writing feels beautiful, and the film is visually striking thanks to its depiction of the Scottish landscape, the shifting timeline can occasionally be disorienting and even frustrating. Furthermore, beyond certain specific details of this story, the plot often follows expected paths; it’s familiar territory for films in this genre and doesn't offer much that feels entirely new. This is disappointing because with some adjustments, the film could have been among the best releases of the year. As it stands, “The Outrun” feels like a missed opportunity, its positive qualities overshadowed, preventing it from being considered seriously as an awards contender. The story had potential and it’s regrettable that it wasn't fully realized.
