The movie feels somewhat superficial, with most of the action crammed into the final ten minutes, yet it remains a fairly pleasant western that brings together three well-known figures from the Wild West in a friendly setting. "Doc Holliday" (Walter Huston) arrives by train to reconnect with his old friend and sheriff "Pat Garrett" (Thomas Mitchell), only to discover his previously stolen horse and its current owner. This encounter introduces us to "Billy the Kid" (Jack Buetel), who intends on holding onto his new horse! A bit of amusing back-and-forth then unfolds between these characters as "Doc" finds himself growing fond of the "Kid," and the "Kid" becomes implicated in a murder, putting him at odds with the lawman. The allure of the captivating "Rio" (Jane Russell) is also thrown into the mix, along with a rather humorous score by Victor Young, resulting in a lighthearted, soap-opera-like adventure that, it must be said, lacks any real danger or excitement. It's unlikely anyone will recall this film, as it runs much too long, and Buetel seems to be present primarily for visual appeal, but it’s not entirely unpleasant thanks to the charm of Mitchell and Russell which helps keep things progressing.
