Grace (Nicole Kidman) resides in her darkened mansion on Jersey Island, where her children, Nicholas (James Bentley) and Anne (Alakina Mann), are highly sensitive to light. With the sudden departure of her household staff, she’s forced to hire a replacement housekeeper, Mrs. Mills (Fionnula Flanagan). Together they work to keep the kids confined in a room with windows completely covered by heavy curtains. Then, strange sounds begin—perhaps a voice? She searches, but these unusual events escalate. The family's carefully maintained routines fall apart; doors are found unlocked, and the children insist their mother is seeing people moving through the house – figures she can’t perceive herself! What could be causing this? Are these incidents linked to Mills or the new staff? Things look up when her husband, Charles (Christopher Eccleston), returns from the War, though he seems distant and troubled. Or does he even truly return? Grace finds herself growing increasingly paranoid, struggling to distinguish reality from illusion, with her children only intensifying her anxieties! Despite its darker tone, it brought back memories of "The Amazing Mr. Blunden," a story that uses children as a link between past, present, and future possibilities. Bentley and Mann are effective in their roles; director Alejandro Amenábar utilizes the gloomy house, expansive and often foggy grounds, and inventive sound design to build a palpable atmosphere of dread. It’s challenging to bring something new to this kind of story—we've all seen so much already—but Kidman controls her performance well, presenting a narrative that isn't as foreseeable as one might assume.
