Following the Second World War, unsettling events unfold at a residence situated on one of the Channel Islands. Alejandro Amenábar wrote and directed this 2001 film, "The Others," which centers around a woman—played by Nicole Kidman—and her two children who are sensitive to light. They reside in an old manor immediately after the war. As three individuals arrive seeking work, they gradually come to believe that the house is haunted. Although categorized as a fantasy due to its depiction of supernatural occurrences like doors opening and shutting on their own, these inexplicable events aren't entirely unheard of. The movie takes itself seriously when considering what might actually be taking place. The home appears cold and lifeless, with a washed-out visual style that’s deliberate for clear reasons. Relatedly, the consistently foggy grounds contribute to an atmospheric sense of unease. The film's success rests on whether its final act can effectively reveal the truth—and it manages to do so. It leaves you pondering some interesting ideas.
