Hardy Kruger delivers a strong performance in this wartime adventure film. He embodies Franz von Werra, a man who attempted numerous escapes from British captivity during World War II, offering insight into his unwavering resolve to return home, eventually traveling across many countries. Initially, he informs his captors that he’ll escape within six months, which they dismiss as arrogance. However, they soon recognize him as resourceful and clever, overcoming obstacles with skill—despite the challenges presented. The film's length might be a slight drawback, but Kruger largely maintains control of the narrative. Even though he is not aligned with the protagonists, it becomes hard to ignore his accomplishments as the story progresses, especially considering that both his adversaries and natural elements actively work against him. Michael Goodliffe and Colin Gordon are among the supporting actors who perform admirably; the cinematography (filmed in Sweden, not Canada) is visually appealing; and the writing often has a sharp quality. Ultimately, I found myself quite fond of the character.
