This feels like a familiar quest for retribution Western, notable for its beautiful landscapes and a single distinctive element. Following a devastating event, a shop owner in Wyoming who seems almost detached from emotion (Nicolas Cage) joins forces with his intelligent daughter (Ryan Kiera Armstrong) to correct what went wrong. Nick Searcy portrays the lead marshal, while Noah Le Gros and Clint Howard appear as antagonists. "The Old Way" (2023) combines elements of the beginnings of "The Outlaw Josey Wales" and "Unforgiven," along with the pairing of an experienced gunslinger and a young girl seen in “True Grit,” plus villains reminiscent of those found in "Hannie Caulder," all set against the backdrop of "The Missouri Breaks" (southwestern Montana, where filming took place). Though it reaches a similar quality to "Hannie Caulder," it doesn't quite achieve the heights of the other films mentioned, but it’s definitely better than more recent Westerns starring Trace Adkins like "Stagecoach: The Texas Jack Story" and "The Virginian," which didn't measure up. It’s pleasant to watch Cage in a role similar to those played by Clint Eastwood, and the young actress is quite capable. The scenery alone makes seeing this film worthwhile. However, the feel of a comic book and some forced writing detract from the realism. Still, the character’s emotional distance and the ‘like father, like daughter’ theme are compelling aspects. The movie has a running time of 1 hour, 34 minutes and was filmed at Yellowstone Ranch in Paradise Valley, Livingston, Montana, about an hour north of the border between northwestern Wyoming and Yellowstone National Park.
