The combination of performers James Whale assembled for this humorous horror movie proved to be remarkably good. During a stormy night, a group of five people find themselves stuck and look for refuge in an unsettling old manor house located in Wales—a place inhabited by the peculiar "Femm" family and their nearly ape-like servant, "Morgan," portrayed by Boris Karloff. As the hours pass, considerable alcohol is consumed, and we are introduced to the manservant's brother who has a fondness for fire, leading to chaotic events. The movie benefits from outstanding portrayals by Melvyn Douglas, Ernest Thesiger, and Raymond Massey, alongside Eva Moore playing the unpleasant "Rebecca" and Charles Laughton in a wonderfully exaggerated role as "Sir William Porterhouse." While the scenery is somewhat simple and the illumination could have been brighter, the direction creates an unsettling atmosphere filled with humor and appeal—it’s certainly something to see.
