THE ODYSSEY represents a sprawling, remarkably true-to-the-source adaptation of Homer’s poem that manages to conclude with a subdued, thoughtful feeling despite its grand presentation. The filmmakers embraced the project’s size and breadth, integrating ten years of conflict, mythology, and disturbing imagery in a way that surprisingly makes the narrative feel more realistic rather than overwhelming. It features an impressive cast highlighted by Matt Damon's outstanding performance, impressively believable physical effects, and filmmaking expertise at its peak. Even Ludwig Göransson’s score is justification enough for seeing it on the big screen; it’s without question one of the strongest cinematic experiences this year has offered. This feels like Christopher Nolan operating at his creative best. After a second viewing, I found myself appreciating THE ODYSSEY even more than before. Familiarity with the complete narrative amplified the emotional impact of certain sequences, particularly when Odysseus shares with Penelope the true burden of the Battle of Troy. Tears were shed throughout. The film’s pacing feels even stronger once you're already aware of its destination, and I honestly can't think of a single scene that should be removed. It marks my first A+ rating since Dune: Part Two.
