The Odds feels like They Shoot Horses, Don't They? filtered through Saw, designed to appeal to viewers with a similar level of comprehension as the main character. The movie centers on an underground competition where people endure pain for money—something they clearly need, given their tolerance for discomfort. Essentially, you have a sadist running the show and masochists participating, so it seems like no one is truly harmed. The logistics of The Odds are so far-fetched that it’s not unexpected, except for the female lead, and IMDb doesn't hesitate to point this out in the film’s description, when it becomes clear there aren’t any other contestants or a million-dollar prize. Instead, the whole thing is just the villain creating his own unauthorized Saw sequel. The real puzzle is why she didn’t see this coming. When told that people are supposedly betting on the competition, she comments that it's strange to bet on something like that. She couldn’t be more mistaken. The antagonist explains that serious gamblers will calculate odds for anything, and he's correct. However, what both of them overlook is that the chances of winning aren’t determined randomly; they involve handicapping, which requires a thorough understanding of the competitors. I may be wrong, but it seems unlikely anyone would track statistics related to things like “holding your hand on a lit candle.” If the villain is so intelligent, why add this unnecessary and unbelievable element to his scheme? We know she’s not going to quit anytime soon, regardless of how much she writhes as the candle burns her palm, which eliminates any suspense or tension. Because it's impossible to connect with the story emotionally, there’s no reason to create or view this movie other than for the unsettling satisfaction of watching an actress feign pain—making The Odds not only foolish but also questionable in its ethics.
