A lovely young woman named Maria finds herself in danger of losing her house following her father’s passing and the debts he left behind. Her potential escape from this situation might involve marrying the person to whom her family owes money, though neither she nor her mother are enthusiastic about that prospect. Following his demand, he departs, leaving her a toy soldier/nutcracker, and overwhelmed with sadness, she expresses a wish to be as small as the doll. As if by magic, this desire is fulfilled, and she realizes that her other toys have come to life too. The enchantment will only last for a full day, provided they all remain together in one room; however, the charming young soldier "Philip" suspects something isn’t right—and that suspicion leads them on various adventures in his home country, where his father, the king, is being drugged by his stepmother and her son, who are guarding a dark secret. Will he and Maria be able to stop their scheme, rescue the kingdom, and possibly discover real love? It's an enjoyable animated film, incorporating just enough music from "The Nutcracker" and "The Magic Flute" to keep things lively. The plot is somewhat convoluted, but that’s not a significant issue—it's simply a vibrant piece of family entertainment with good animation and amusing animal characters, concluding in a predictable fashion. It isn’t exceptional, certainly, but I did appreciate seeing it on a large screen during the Christmas season.
