It’s not awful, but it's rather disappointing. *The Nutcracker and the Four Realms* feels like a gentle and uncomplicated movie, acceptable perhaps for watching during the holidays. However, overall, it doesn’t really work—even with some visually appealing effects and recognizable actors involved. Keira Knightley as Sugar Plum, Helen Mirren as Mother Ginger, and Morgan Freeman as Drosselmeyer are all welcome to see, but their roles don't leave a lasting impression. Mackenzie Foy and Jayden Fowora-Knight have a good rapport, while Jack Whitehall and Omid Djalili seem like clever choices for the parts, even if they aren’t given enough to do. The story is where it falls short; it simply doesn’t deliver an engaging experience—I didn't find myself invested in what was happening. The narrative developments are fairly easy to anticipate, particularly the central surprise. As mentioned, though, the special effects are nice and the Christmas atmosphere is enjoyable throughout. It’s just kind of…average. There are definitely worse things you could watch, though.
