The Nun II manages to be better than the initial film, largely thanks to solid performances from the cast, noticeably enhanced practical effects, and striking visuals; it’s a fairly enjoyable horror movie on a large scale. Director Michael Chaves made good use of the resources available, delivering sequences that are skillfully handled and build suspense. The film does have some problems, though. The middle portion feels sluggish, and it continues to rely too much on predictable jump scares that don't always work well. A degree of unnecessary convolution creeps into the story—including odd flashbacks and details about the characters—resulting in a somewhat disjointed final section. Even with these shortcomings, this installment seems like progress for the series, though I’m not convinced it will ever reach the quality level of the earlier Conjuring movies. Rating: B-
