I hadn’t seen this movie until recently, even though I’d often heard about the sad ending that seems to stick with a lot of people—and now I understand why. Going in without knowing much beyond that, I wasn’t prepared for how the film tells its story, and it's quite effective and genuinely upsetting. It’s unusual for movies to really get to me emotionally, but this one definitely managed to do so. The movie has strong performances from Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, along with James Garner and Gena Rowlands. Joan Allen and James Marsden are also pretty good in smaller parts. If I'm being picky—and it is a small thing—I think the film could have been trimmed down a bit; it felt like it might have ended sooner, but it’s not a major issue.
