A group of eight people, some of whom don't know each other, find themselves on an unplanned journey aboard a fancy yacht in the Strait of Georgia near Vancouver. Eventually, a portion of them end up in a small boat headed for a nearby island, where disturbing events unfold. The question is whether anyone will survive. Jesse Metcalfe takes on a role as something of a lead character, harboring a hidden purpose. “The Ninth Passenger” (2018) combines elements of drama, thriller, and horror, evoking comparisons to films like "Dead Calm" (1989) and "Caught Inside" (2010). However, it introduces an unexpected development toward the end that feels more in line with movies such as “Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan” (1989). Despite being the weakest of these films, it’s competently produced considering its limited budget and features a cast of relatively unknown actors. The atmosphere is appropriate, the sound quality is good, and the special effects are noteworthy. Nevertheless, the script could have benefited from further refinement; the story feels disjointed, as if various concepts were assembled without sufficient polish or internal consistency. It’s possible that this lack of clarity actually works to the film's advantage, though. Metcalfe delivers a solid performance as the central figure, even motivating some viewers to improve their fitness routines. The female cast includes Alexia Fast (as Jess), Veronica Dunne (Christy), Sabina Gadecki (Tina), and Cinta Laura Kiehl (Nicole). The director focuses on showcasing Kiehl’s beauty—though there is no nudity involved—but she's arguably the least memorable of the group. The movie has a running time of 1 hour, 16 minutes, although it’s strangely credited as being 93 minutes long and was filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia. GRADE: C+
