This TV thriller turned out well. It possesses a campy feel while maintaining a dark tone that I found appealing. The "Night Stalker" appeared frequently; he wasn't kept obscured in the darkness for long. There are a few brief but effective action scenes featuring the Night Stalker escaping police cars, motorcycles, and even gunfire. Kolchak seems to manage the Night Stalker with relative ease when compared to the police force and their shortcomings, though that’s part of what makes this movie enjoyable. Darrin McGavin as Kolchak was a character I really liked growing up, and I loved the TV series that came out afterward. The portrayal of Kolchak is different in this film than it is in the television show. His main focus seems to be securing a significant story so he can find work in New York again. He doesn’t appear to have a friendly relationship with his boss, Tony Vincenzo; they seem quite distant from each other. Kolchak uses bribery and makes some compromises to obtain what he needs for the scoop. I was taken aback that he isn't wearing his light blue suit here. However, he does have the signature porkpie straw hat. He also has a romantic interest who seems considerably younger and more attractive than Carl. Darren McGavin delivers an excellent performance as Kolchak, and the film captures a gritty '70s Las Vegas vibe nicely.
