Consider whether you can accept its plausibility and then attempt to convince yourself, no matter your location, that such an event couldn’t occur here. Carl Kolchak, portrayed by Darren McGavin, is a Los Angeles newspaper reporter characterized by his cynicism and abrupt manner, who becomes convinced that the actions of a serial killer are actually those of a vampire in contemporary times. The film's influence was significant enough to warrant a sequel and a television series. It’s more enjoyable than most TV horror movies, offering numerous appealing elements, including memorable and unusual characters brought to life by a script that likes to mislead the viewer. The cinematography is also well done; it’s clear considerable effort went into its production. Richard Matheson wrote the screenplay based on a story by Jeffrey Rice, supported by several accomplished character actors from the 40s and 50s who play supporting roles alongside the captivating and humorous McGavin. While perhaps not as frightening to modern audiences as it was for viewers in 1972, it remains a horror film worthy of preservation. 7/10
