X sets a new standard even within its established category when it comes to graphic violence. The fights are as exaggerated as viewers anticipate, and there's no shortage of them. However, what drives the narrative forward? What reason is there for an audience member to connect with any of the characters or remain invested beyond witnessing another brawl? The film does present a reasonably compelling history for one of its central figures, revealed through brief sequences that flash back to earlier events. Regrettably, this element isn’t explored further. The purpose behind the most skilled Triad warriors eliminating each other—along with roughly a thousand extras—remains obscure. What is the underlying reason? What sort of scheme or unusual plot twist is at play? A significant amount of emotional buildup seemed intended to provide motivation, but ultimately fails to resonate. Iko Uwais has achieved prominence in this type of film and undoubtedly excels at his martial arts skills. He was given a role here; nevertheless, he doesn’t demonstrate any particular acting ability. If your sole desire is to witness the extremely violent fight sequences, you won't be disappointed. The action would likely earn a 7 or 8 out of 10 in that respect. But if you find yourself questioning whether seeing this film was truly worthwhile, I’d say it barely makes the cut. You can safely miss it without feeling like you’ve deprived yourself of anything important.
