A genuinely surprising and enjoyable retro comedy! I first noticed this movie because of something I saw during this year's Oscars—it seemed like part of their promotional campaign. I went looking for more information, expecting another forgettable comedy along the lines of 'Daddy’s Home'. That’s why I didn’t even bother watching the previews, and now I regret that decision. It turned out to be a wonderful film, not just funny but easily one of the best releases this year; it absolutely deserves a place on everyone's top ten or twenty lists, at minimum. The movie is set in late 1970s Los Angeles and centers around two private investigators who are brought together to investigate the mysterious reappearance of a porn star, according to her aunt. The case then connects with another disappearance involving a high-profile girl, and following various clues, the pair risk their lives trying to solve it. The rest of the story reveals whether they’re successful or not. It was directed by the same person who did 'Iron Man 3', and apparently written originally as a television series before being adapted into this comedy. What I really appreciated were Ryan and Russell's performances; they were fantastic, especially Ryan Gosling in several of the comedic moments. I haven’t laughed that much or that well in quite some time—it was a real surprise because I didn’t think either of them could do comedy, but their work here is exceptional. Beyond just those two leads, there's also a character reminiscent of 'Nancy Drew', a teenage girl who joins the investigation and makes a significant contribution to the story. You might assume you can figure out what’s going to happen, but it has a well-crafted script with plenty of unexpected turns. Everyone involved did a great job; even though the movie is two hours long, it felt like it flew by. The cast, crew, and everyone else should definitely return for a sequel, which I sincerely hope will happen soon. It’s a film that adults should make an effort to see. 8/10
