I was excited about this combination of horror and X-Men elements ever since I first saw the preview. Even with all the negative buzz lately, I still wanted to check it out myself. Unfortunately, it wasn’t good at all. This is concerning for any future projects from Josh Boone, who also did "The Stand" mini-series—remember “The Fault in Our Stars”? We already have a general idea of what happens thanks to the trailers: young mutants are being troubled and frightened by something within an asylum setting. What works best are moments that recall earlier X-Men stories where characters discover their abilities, which usually play out well on screen. However, the visual effects aren't consistent; they range from acceptable to noticeably cheap. The movie features a cast of newer actors who are gaining recognition like Maisie Williams ("Game of Thrones"), Anya Taylor-Joy ("The Witch/Queen’s Gambit”), and Charlie Heaton (“Stranger Things”), but their performances are just okay, and the accents are really poorly done—Irish, Russian (or something similar), and a Southern U.S. accent, respectively. And the plot itself was pretty underwhelming. If you lower your expectations to that of a subpar "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" episode, maybe then you’ll find some enjoyment in it.
