Following a devastating event, two military-raised siblings—played by Shannon Presby and Lori Loughlin—find themselves living with their unusual relatives in southern Florida. There, they quickly clash with the more aggressive students at their new school. Eric Stoltz portrays a character who develops an interest in the sister, while James Spader takes on the role of the central antagonist. "The New Kids," released in 1985, shares qualities with "The Karate Kid" from the previous year, though it doesn't involve sports. It also echoes “Tuff Turf,” which premiered just a week earlier and also stars Spader as the main character. This film omits the musical and humorous aspects found in “Turf” and has parallels to “Dangerously Close,” released the following year. Stoltz later appeared in "Some Kind of Wonderful" a few years down the line. Lori Loughlin is appealing, but blonde Paige Price truly shines among the female cast as Karen. If you’re a fan of similar 1980s teen movies and those like them, “The New Kids” might be worth seeing; however, it doesn't reach the level of films such as "The Karate Kid," "Dangerously Close," or "Some Kind of Wonderful." The movie feels stretched out by roughly 15 to 20 minutes. It has a running time of 1 hour and 50 minutes and was filmed in Miami-Dade County, Florida, specifically in Homestead and Perrine, which are located in the southeastern part of the state. GRADE: B-
