A predatory animal is attacking people and animals on an island near Southern California. The Sheriff (Franc Luz) grows concerned as he looks into these unusual deaths, while the mayor appears to be concealing information (Robert Lansing). Lisa Langlois portrays the mayor’s daughter who has come for a visit from elsewhere. “The Nest” (1987) utilizes the same plot structure as “Jaws,” but substitutes a different monster. "Dead & Buried" (1981) employed a similar approach, though it managed to incorporate something original. This film is fairly standard but still enjoyable for those who appreciate creature features of this type. The filmmakers do try to introduce an inventive element in the final portion of the movie to elevate it beyond being average; however, it ends up feeling more silly than frightening and I stopped paying attention. Langlois is charming, while Terri Treas makes a strong impression as a scientist who may be unstable. Nancy Morgan plays a pretty waitress, and Heidi Helmer appears as a local resident who’s fine with serving her mother pancakes that fell on the floor. The film has a running time of 1 hour, 27 minutes, and filming locations include various coastal areas around Los Angeles, such as Santa Catalina Island (beach), Malibu (beach), Venice, Coldwater Canyon (Mayor’s mansion), Studio City (town streets), and Bronson Canyon (caves). The lighthouse scenes were filmed in Cape Disappointment, Washington. GRADE: C
