My expectations were low going in, figuring the pairing of Walter Pidgeon and Ernest Borgnine couldn’t save what seemed destined to be just another forgettable made-for-TV action film. Unfortunately, that’s precisely what it turned out to be. The story involves a submarine sent down into the ocean's depths to recover scientists trapped after an earthquake damages their research facility. While billed as an adventure, that description feels generous; it progresses at an incredibly deliberate pace, and none of the performers—not even Ben Gazzara in his role as Captain "Blake"—are given much opportunity for meaningful interaction or engaging action. There are some decent-looking underwater shots, and a memorable appearance by “Nemo” before he became part of the Disney franchise, though this version is portrayed as mischievous and gigantic. Ultimately, it’s best to skip this one.
