Barry Levinson directs The Natural, which Roger Towne & Phil Dusenberry adapted from Bernard Malamud’s novel. Robert Redford leads the cast alongside Robert Duvall, Glenn Close, Kim Basinger, Wilford Brimley, Barbara Hershey, Robert Prosky and Richard Farnsworth. Randy Newman composed the music, and Caleb Deschanel was in charge of cinematography. The Natural is a sentimental sports film that requires viewers to accept its fantastical elements and mythic qualities. Those who can do so will find it visually appealing, full of human resilience, and boasting impressive technical aspects. The story’s parallels with Arthurian legends—Roy Hobbs, played by Redford in a quietly powerful performance, gets a second chance—make it clear that this is a deliberately fanciful work; those familiar with films like Field of Dreams will appreciate it. The period-specific design, photography, and musical score are all excellent, complemented by a strong supporting ensemble. It’s possible to find yourself celebrating and feeling moved by the film's conclusion if you understand what kind of movie it is. It’s simply beautiful filmmaking. 8.5/10
