CinemaSerf on The Naked Gun

7/10 · Aug 2, 2025

The preview featuring the young girl going into the bank had me worried this would be awful. Surprisingly, it turned out not to be. This film feels like a genuine tribute to classics like “Airplane” and “Naked Gun,” and both Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson seem fully committed to the entertaining nature of the project. The story is pretty basic—it revolves around a tech giant named "Cane" (Danny Huston) who has developed a device that can supposedly calm people, but it doesn’t quite work out as intended. “Drebin” (Neeson) is the son of a famous detective from “Police Squad,” and he must try to stop Cane's schemes while dealing with a clever adversary and their tough enforcer "Sig" (Kevin Durand), along with his stressed-out boss (CCH Pounder) who keeps threatening to pull the plug on him. After a body is found in an electric car in a river, he meets the victim’s sister “Beth” (Anderson), and they begin working together. Stopping the New Year's Eve ball drop seems like a challenge, but those familiar with the earlier films will enjoy the suggestive jokes, the literal interpretations—like "take a seat"...“no thanks, I have some at home already”—and it looks like everyone involved is happy to be over-the-top (Durand especially; he’s about as frightening as stale bread) leading up to an ending that feels both obvious and hints at more to come. Anderson shines, delivering her lines in a deliberately awkward way, almost as if she's saying "okay, here comes Pam." The film is also well-paced thanks to tight writing, editing, and overall production. Clocking in under ninety minutes means there’s not much time to get bored of the jokes. It’s genuinely fun, goofy, and a little childish, but still manages to elicit some laughs.
