I’m not even sure where to begin with this one; it’s truly awful. Before I completely dismantle the movie, let me explain that I went in hoping for something good. I'm a fan of Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella, Russell Crowe, and the Universal Monsters franchise. Unfortunately, my expectations weren’t met. The film suffers from some of the most jarring tonal issues I’ve ever encountered. Inconsistent tone is one of my biggest complaints in movies. It shifts between being scary, a big action movie, and attempting to emulate Brendan Fraser's "The Mummy," seemingly without knowing what kind of movie it wants to be. The actress playing the female lead—I can’t recall her name—is incredibly forgettable. Her acting isn't the problem; she does fine with what she’s given. It's the writing that makes her character fall flat. Jake Johnson’s role is among the most irritating I’ve seen on screen, and I really mean it. I disliked almost every moment he was in the film. There are a few bright spots: Sofia Boutella delivers an excellent performance, Russell Crowe embraces the campiness of his part, and Tom Cruise provides another reliable showing even though his character is difficult to like. Alex Kurtzman is largely responsible for what holds this movie back. The direction lacks energy, and Kurtzman proves himself to be a weak screenwriter and director. The film feels disjointed; the tonal problems and uninspired writing are significant issues. While there are some entertaining action sequences and good performances, they aren't enough to prevent it from being a dull disaster. 1.3/5.0
