Balderston, features Boris Karloff, Zita Johann, David Manners, Arthur Byron, Edward Van Sloan, and Bramwell Fletcher in the cast. James Dietrich handled the music score and Charles J. Stumar was responsible for the cinematography. This initial installment of Universal's Mummy series recounts the tale of Imhotep (Karloff), who, roused from his resting place by a group of workers, is convinced that a contemporary woman embodies the spirit of his former beloved. It progresses at a deliberate pace, feels theatrical in its presentation, and aside from Karloff’s performance, the acting and writing barely manage to attain an acceptable standard. Nevertheless, there's something unsettling about this movie, containing several truly disturbing moments. The dark visuals contribute significantly to the somber mood, and it’s pleasantly surprising that a film of this nature avoids relying on cheap thrills to capture your attention. It holds significance in numerous respects and is definitely worth watching for those with an interest in horror cinema's development. 7/10
