I had some reservations about seeing The Mouse Trap, especially considering how many hastily made public domain movies lately have been dull and lacking imagination. However, when Steamboat Willie became available in the public domain and this film was announced, I wanted to see just how far it would push the limits of what’s permissible. The Mouse Trap is certainly a low-budget slasher movie, and it doesn't hide that fact. The filmmakers depend heavily on the Mickey Mouse character and Disney jokes, almost too much so. The constant Disney references, while initially funny, quickly become annoying. It seems like the movie depends on the unusualness of putting a well-known public domain character into a slasher film, but that novelty fades as it goes on. For example, the villain’s costume—a strange imitation of Steamboat Willie—doesn't have much impact after you see it a few times, and instead becomes something to pull your attention away from what’s happening. Ultimately, The Mouse Trap isn’t a great movie, but there are parts of it that are entertaining. While the film’s dependence on Disney jokes and overuse of Mickey Mouse can be tiresome, the obvious enthusiasm of the cast and crew adds to its charm. It's good for one viewing, particularly if you're interested in seeing how far a public domain slasher movie can go, but it probably won’t stand up to multiple viewings. If you want to watch a silly, low-budget horror film with an unusual idea, The Mouse Trap might be worth checking out—just don’t expect too much beyond the initial concept.
