I had some reservations about seeing The Mouse Trap, especially considering how many hastily made public domain movies lately have been dull and lacking in imagination. But when Steamboat Willie entered the public domain and this film was announced, I became interested to see just how aggressively it would capitalize on that. The Mouse Trap is certainly a low-budget slasher movie, and it doesn’t try to hide that fact. The filmmakers really play up the Mickey Mouse character and Disney jokes, almost too much so. The story itself isn't very developed, which leaves you with more questions than answers about why all this violence is happening. The constant Disney references, while initially funny, quickly get old. It seems like the movie depends on the idea of putting a familiar public domain figure into a slasher film to make it interesting, but that feeling doesn’t last very long. For example, the killer's costume—a strange and exaggerated version of the Steamboat Willie look—doesn't have much impact after you see it a few times; it becomes more annoying than scary. However, you can tell that everyone involved had fun making this movie, and that energy comes through in both the acting and how the film looks. Even though the script isn’t great, the actors seem really into their parts, bringing some enthusiasm to the project. The visuals aren't revolutionary, but they are creative given the limited resources. The filmmakers clearly drew inspiration from classic horror movies and mixed them with a playful, almost mocking tone. It’s not a brilliant film by any means, but it does have its entertaining aspects. While the Disney references and Mickey Mouse jokes can be irritating, the obvious enjoyment of the cast and crew makes it somewhat appealing. It's good for one viewing, particularly if you’re curious to see how far a public domain slasher can go, but probably not something you’d want to watch again. If you’re looking for a silly, low-budget horror movie with an unusual concept, The Mouse Trap might be worth checking out—just don't expect anything too profound.
