The film follows Ernesto Guevara—known as “Fuser” by his close friend Alberto Granado—as he prepares to embark on an extensive journey across South America with Granado, using a very worn Norton 500 motorcycle. They intend to travel over ten thousand kilometers from Buenos Aires to the northernmost part of the continent, passing through Patagonia, before Granado turns thirty. Their initial destination is his girlfriend Chichina's home, but afterward it’s just them, their motorcycle, and whatever they encounter as they begin what proves to be a quite revealing road trip. Guevara is nearing completion of his medical training, focusing on leprosy, and during the journey they visit a leprosarium where he becomes even more certain about his pre-existing beliefs: that this continent, rich in resources but struggling with poverty, couldn’t work properly unless it was unified into one political entity free from artificial boundaries and personal gain. Granado's perspective is less concerned with grand ideas; he mainly wants to enjoy the experience and have romantic encounters whenever possible. The differing viewpoints of the two men—though they don't always see eye-to-eye—along with the beautiful visuals create a moving backdrop for this depiction of their actual trip, drawn from Guevara’s personal writings. His writing is expressive and emotionally powerful, and Gael Garcia Bernal portrays his character’s weaknesses alongside his visionary ideals. It has moments of genuine humor as well, thanks to de la Serna and the motorcycle's constant breakdowns, and there are numerous cultural references as they encounter various groups, including the Inca people and others. This film is more than just a travel documentary; it possesses an inquisitive quality that engages both the eyes and the mind—even the spirit. There’s something almost magical about their passage through the Andes mountains, making this a captivating and pleasurable movie experience.
