The Mother is a fairly standard action movie released directly to streaming services; it's watchable but unlikely to stick with you for very long. The plot centers on an assassin who becomes a parent and must defend her child from criminals involved in drugs and weapons trafficking. Though similar to films like Taken or Peppermint, The Mother suffers from a significant flaw that those other movies avoided: its length of two hours. While the increased budget resulted in a slightly more refined look, extending the thin narrative by about thirty minutes had a noticeable negative impact. The story felt slow between action scenes, at times becoming drawn out and boring. The production values for the action were acceptable, but the action itself was rather uninspired. Jennifer Lopez is enjoyable as the stern and isolated mother assassin, and she's easily the strongest element of the film. It’s not a terrible movie by any means, and those who claim it is probably had unrealistic expectations going in. The Mother is an unremarkable streaming action title that fulfills its basic purpose – there’s destruction, gunfights, and while ultimately forgettable, it wasn't completely unrewarding to watch.
