It's a genuinely difficult film to experience. It’s not primarily due to what the story is about, but because there's a sense from early on that things are headed toward an ending that will affect everyone negatively. Anne Reid delivers a solid performance as the central figure ("Mary"), who experiences loss and discovers she can’t return to her former life. Her time is divided between her son and his family and with her daughter and her young child. The son's house is undergoing renovations, and he has hired "Darren" (Daniel Craig), who also happens to be the married boyfriend of Mary’s daughter, “Paula” (Cathryn Bradshaw). Feeling isolated and wanting connection, "Mary" slowly becomes drawn to this younger man, despite the significant age difference, and he readily offers his assistance. As expected, her family learns about it, which is when everything starts to unravel. That's also when the narrative quickly descends into melodrama. This already troubled family spirals out of control, and the subtle, emotional aspects are abandoned in favor of displays of anger and a feeling of something truly harsh and crude. Reid and Craig share a few worthwhile moments together, but generally the rest of the actors seem uninspired, and as the film progresses, it feels increasingly like it's trying to provoke reactions simply for the sake of doing so. The storyline involving the relationship and intimacy across generations had the potential to be more meaningful if director Roger Michell hadn’t seemed hesitant to explore it fully.
