Charles Coburn could have had even more to do, but he's still quite charming as the person arranging the introduction of his newly obtained landlady, “Connie” (Jean Arthur), to the man renting half of his bedroom. That’s "Joe" (Joel McCrea), and he arrives after a brief, unsuccessful attempt at some silly spying by “Dingle,” who was only supposed to stay for a short time and had no right to take the fellow's six dollars to sleep in her apartment. With that established, what follows isn't particularly complex, but Arthur is very good as the predictable romance unfolds despite her already being promised to the reliable “Pendergast” (Richard Gaines) and a hidden storyline that might drag them into problems with the FBI! There’s a definite spark between Arthur and McCrea, lots of playful moments, and some excellent comedic timing from Coburn, whose matchmaking skills would have been perfect for something like "Fiddler on the Roof." The dialogue moves along quickly, adding to the absurdity of everything as people in neighboring rooms talk to each other through their open windows. Because the cast is relatively small, it’s easier to connect with the characters, and with a cheerful score from studio musician Leigh Hardine, Coburn, Arthur, and McCrea keep us amused for one hundred pleasant minutes.
