George Clooney served as director, co-writer, and star in this intriguing drama set during wartime. The story follows a specialized group tasked with recovering invaluable works of art from the Nazis as they were falling back. These weren’t elite soldiers like those found in special forces units, but rather individuals committed to locating and safeguarding these items – which ranged from small paintings to large sculptures. While the historical accuracy and logistical details are inconsistent, the film generally conveys a positive feeling. It highlights another brutal, though rarely discussed, consequence of the atrocities of World War II. Matt Damon ("Granger") appears periodically as he attempts to persuade "Claire Simone" (Cate Blanchett) in Paris that their intentions aren't centered around stealing art for personal collections; there’s also sufficient action to demonstrate how perilous the war's conclusion was while they worked to stop destruction. The film's production quality is acceptable, nothing exceptional really, but it proves enjoyable and carries a message that remains long after the less-than-stellar acting fades from memory.
