The film progresses at an agonizing pace, ultimately presenting a fairly commonplace comedic horror drama revolving around another unconvincing puppet. The story involves two brothers, identified as “Hal” and “Bill,” who find an antique hat box following their father’s death; inside is what appears to be a toy monkey. After they wind it up, their babysitter disappears, marking the beginning of its sinister actions. Reasoning that it's best to move past the situation, they decide to discard it down a well. Some time passes, and “Hal” (Theo James), now with a son named “Petey” (Colin O’Brien), is attempting to reconnect with him after a marriage has ended. His twin brother is also distanced from him, so he's not pleased when he receives a call informing him that their aunt has passed away. This requires him to bring the boy along to their childhood home, where, predictably, something is located in the wardrobe. There are moments of unintentional humor, though it’s unclear if this was deliberate, as James gives a rather uninspired performance and the portrayal of sibling conflict involves an absurd level of threat. The concept isn't inherently flawed, despite its lack of originality; however, the acting quality and writing are subpar, and familiar themes—family disagreements, a new stepfather (Elijah Wood)—feel overly predictable, offering little fresh insight over a rather dull hundred minutes. I can imagine some worthwhile uses for the chimpanzee, though!
