A prominent murder case gone wrong leads to lead detective “Damico” (Broderick Crawford) being publicly discredited. However, he’s secretly tasked by his superior to go undercover within a waterfront gang. This group is controlled by the smooth and heartless "Castro" (Ernest Borgnine), who consistently relies on his subordinates to carry out illegal activities, protecting himself from legal repercussions. “Damico” faces a challenge in appearing to have genuinely switched sides for Castro’s benefit. Crawford delivers a solid performance; he portrays the part of the large, tough police officer pretending to be a criminal convincingly. Neville Brand is acceptable as the enforcer "Gunner," but Borgnine's acting feels underwhelming. He fails to project any real threat, which lessens the impact of the story as it moves toward its foreseeable conclusion. The film functions adequately, but that’s all—I don’t anticipate remembering it because there isn’t much to make it memorable.
