After a terrible storm hits, a Maine town is enveloped in an unsettling mist that contains a dangerous secret—it’s attacking people. A group of survivors finds themselves trapped inside a supermarket and must fight to survive against the creatures lurking within. This movie from King proves to be really frustrating. There's a lot to appreciate about it, some things I genuinely liked, but also elements that were hard to stomach. The film shines when depicting the growing panic among those stuck in the store, and how they deal with problems while creating new ones—it feels realistic, showing how everything falls apart and what people do to maintain their sanity. Similarly, the initial attacks by the unseen creatures are well done; victims ignore warnings and rush into danger, leading to some exciting moments exploring the cargo area and attempting to find safety outside, only to encounter different creatures with unique abilities. The scenes involving the flying insects and attempts to keep them out of the store, along with the intense fight in the pharmacy during complete darkness, are particularly creepy and memorable. I also enjoyed the final battles and escapes, the gore, and how the creatures are ultimately handled, all leading up to a surprising and shocking ending that contains some disturbing moments. The creature effects are well done too; these are the parts I really liked, even though the movie has its problems. A major issue is the amount of religious talk that feels misguided and unpleasant, making me less inclined to want to watch it again. Another problem is the length—it drags on, especially in the middle sections, which emphasize how long it actually is. Despite what’s good about it, these issues do hold it back.
