What a fantastic movie, it really brought back memories of how commanding Clark Gable could be when he had a good role and a solid script to work with. He plays "Gay," an aging but still handsome cowboy who’s drifting through life alongside his friend “Guido” (Eli Wallach), their lifestyle slowly fading away. Everything shifts when they meet the somewhat flighty "Roslyn" (Marilyn Monroe), who's in Reno seeking a divorce. A brief romantic entanglement arises, and even though they move into a house that “Guido” was constructing for his deceased wife, she becomes interested in "Gay," and a connection begins to form. Both men retain their cowboy instincts, and when a small group of wild mustangs is seen, they want to capture some (to sell as dog food!), but they need help to do so. Luckily, while on the way to a rodeo, they run into the stranded "Perce" (Montgomery Clift), and soon they’re pursuing the horses across the Nevada desert – much to “Roslyn's” dismay. There are several conflicts in this well-paced and inventively filmed drama where all four characters have problems with each other that challenge their devotion, honesty, and resolve—while also providing a touch of romance as the story wraps up and decisions need to be made. Thelma Ritter does her usual good job, although her appearance is limited as their injured friend "Isabelle," but ultimately it’s the group of four who really work well together in this lively and engaging story, keeping things entertaining for just over two hours. I've never quite understood how Monroe became such a huge star. She was undeniably beautiful, but not particularly convincing as an actress. However, here she shows some improvement; she seems more genuine than usual. The final showdown between man and horse is almost worth sitting through the entire film for. A really good movie!
